Early election would stretch depleted ALP war chest

LABOR believes the financial cost of any early election brought on by a Kevin Rudd leadership challenge could overstretch the party's coffers and leave the Coalition to dominate the airwaves in a TV ad war.

But the price tag attached to an early election could further complicate Labor's chances, with figures released by the Australian Electoral Commission this month showing that recent turmoil on financial markets had taken a toll on the ALP war chest.

The value of one key investment arm in Queensland, Labor Holdings, has taken a $5.5 million hit compared to the year before, although it managed a $1.9 million donation to the federal ALP last financial year
