Barnaby may take on Windsor at election

Barnaby may take on Windsor at election

Colourful Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has been approached by colleagues to run against key independent Tony Windsor at the next federal election - an offer he'd be "foolish" not to take, he says.

The Queensland senator has told the Nine Network that he would consider taking on Mr Windsor in his central NSW seat of New England and moving to the lower house, after being sounded out by key coalition political figures.

"Of course, I would consider it - I'd be foolish not to," the Tamworth-born, Queensland-based, opposition spokesman for regional development told Nine.

Windsor bemused by Senator's tilt for New England

The independent member for New England Tony Windsor says it remains to be seen if Senator Barnaby Joyce is serious about running for the seat.

But Tony Windsor says he questions the Senator's motives.

He says with the next election two and a half years away, a lot can change.

"Prior to the last election he was going to run in the New England and didn't bother, but he's quite at liberty to run where ever he likes.

Joyce a 'credible candidate', says Truss

Nationals leader Warren Truss says Barnaby Joyce is a "credible candidate" who could steal the central NSW seat of New England.

Senator Joyce has confirmed he is being sounded out for a run in the lower house at the next federal election, potentially pitting him against independent MP Tony Windsor.

He would prefer to contest the electorate of Maranoa in southern Queensland where he lives, but might have to settle instead for New England, where he was born

Windsor tells Joyce to bring it on

Independent MP Tony Windsor has told his arch-rival Barnaby Joyce to bring it on if the Nationals Senate leader wants to run against him in the next federal election.

The pair have a long-running feud and now Senator Joyce is considering running against Mr Windsor in the once Nationals stronghold of New England.
