Uni atheist society president forced to resign over cartoon

Postby Trebuchet » 23 Jan 2012, 14:04

A row has erupted over an atheist society at a top London University posting a cartoon sketch featuring the prophet Muhammad having a drink with Jesus on its Facebook page.

A student Muslim group is demanding the 'offensive' image of Jesus and Mo having a drink at the bar, taken from an online satirical sketch, be removed from the social networking site.

The president of the Atheist, Secularist and Humanist society at the prestigious University College London (UCL), Robbie Yellon, has stepped down over the controversy.

But the Society still refuses to take down the image - claiming its right to defend 'freedom of expression'.
Secretary for the National Federation of Atheist, Humanist and Secular Student Societies, Michael Paynter, said: 'Robbie stepped aside because he signed up as president to organise events and run a student society.

'He did not appreciate the stress he would be under when dealing with a controversy like this, so he wanted to make way for someone else.'

So he should.
Im an atheist and i would have had Jesus healing a sick person (not Mohamed) and Mohamed shagging a youngster!
He wasted an opportunity and now he is paying!

I do not understand why people say or do something and then back off or apologise for their opinion. :-/

Nor do I but people are amazed when you dont suddenly get all sheepish when someone gets offended.
As an example when i had the misfortune of working in the corporate world i turned up to one of those pointless "Team Lunches" where my new manager was talking about someone called "Bambi". Not knowing what had come before in the conversation i piped up and said "What kind of F%^&ing idiot would name their kid Bambi" to which he responded "Bambi is my girlfriend" I replied "well its not like your the Idiot who named her" to which he said "No its her professional name she named herself" so rather than kiss a lot of arze I said "well for gods sake dont let her name the children if you have any". He took it rather well i thought and to his credit he never held it against me though most probably would have!
